1 million calories…

This weekend I participated in a Super Sprint Triathlon (200m swim, 15km bike and 5km bike). Leading up to the triathlon, I tried to behave myself with what I was eating and more importantly how much I was eating. During a triathlon you burn a lot of calories, so I thought that hitting up a buffet was well earned. So my girlfriend and I went to Tucker’s Marketplace. (www.tuckers.ca – they have crazy sound so be warned)

Tucker’s Marketplace is a great all-you-can-eat buffet in the heart of Ottawa’s ByWard Market. It has a great selection of food, something for almost everyone.  Be warned that Tucker’s is a popular spot to take the family, for tourists and groups going out to celebrate. This can be annoying because it can cause a bit of a wait but it is also good because the food is always being switched out, kIMG-20110904-00210eeping it fresh and hot.

We went down to Tucker’s Marketplace for Sunday brunch, we got there right for opening (10:30am), so we got seated before the rush. Which is good because it got busy very, very fast. My goal for the morning was to eat all three meals in one sitting. So I started off with breakfast. I got the French toast, homefries, scrambled eggs, breakfast sausage and bacon. The bacon was good,as were the sausages, but the star of the breakfast was the French toast. It was crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, the best part was that it wasn’t cold and soggy like most of buffet french toast that I’ve had. On the other hand the scrambled eggs were very blah and the homefries weren’t seasoned at all.  On top of what I got you could also get fresh made waffles, pancakes and omelettes (made to order!). There is tons of great selection at Tucker’s Marketplace.

IMG-20110904-00212For lunch I had pasta, chicken bacon alfredo to be exact. This is my most favourite part of Tucker’s Marketplace. They have a chef who makes pasta or an omelette right in front of your eyes. Not only do they make amazing food but it is great entertainment. Watching the chef make three omelettes at a time while chatting with everyone waiting their food is pretty impressive, they have some awesome wrist flipping action. What is even better is when they are preparing your pasta sauce and they create a huge fireball! My pasta was chock full of bacon, banana peppers, sausage and cheese. Yummy!

For supper I went for what Tucker’s IMG-20110904-00211Marketplace is famous for, their ham and roast beef. I only had the ham, along with garlic mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, sausage, beans and some bread. Tucker’s has a whole station where they carve roast beef and ham for you and it is amazing. My ham was juicy and sweet, I only wish that I had more room for more of it. The garlic mashed potatoes, sausage, beans and  bread were all good. The real start though was the sweet potatoes it was  sweet and buttery, just the way dad would make it. Melt in your mouth, a must at Tuckers.

To end the dining experience I finished with dessert, which was raspberry sorbet and bread pudding, both were good. The real star is the selection, there is everything from ice cream to a chocolate fountain, something for everyone!

IMG-20110904-00213Tucker’s Marketplace is probably the best buffet in Ottawa. If you’re looking for a place to take a group or a bunch of kids this is the place it’s also great if you just want to eat a million calories.

If eating at Tucker’s Marketplace wasn’t enough calories for one day, we also went for coffee and got a cupcake from Isobel’s Cupcakes (www.isobels.com) who are sadly moving.

    Great blog! How was the triathlon BTW? I am looking as this triathlon as a weak swimmer – is this a good debut open water swimming competition? Thanks.

      The triathlon went really well! I’m a weak swimmer as well and this was a great introduction to open water swims. The water is never over your head in the try-a-tri and super sprint, so if you need to take a breather you can just stand up. Also it’s easy to position yourself so you’re not in the middle of the pack. I would definitely give it a tri! :P There is also a triathlon coming up in May where the swim is in a pool if that makes you more comfortable.
