So the last couple of days I’ve been spending all of my time packing because we’re moving. It seems kind of crazy to be spending so much time packing just to move 5 minutes down the street. One reason that we’re packing last minute is because my girlfriend and I just came back from New York City! The Big Apple is a foodie mecca, there are so many great restaurants, markets and food stores! There are foods representing almost every part of the world and culture. Plus New York City is just a cool city. It has so much energy and so many things do and see! We were in NYC for 3 nights, we flew into Newark airport on Friday and then flew out on Tuesday afternoon. While in New York we saw some amazing things and ate tons of great things.
Since we wanted to save our money for food while New York, we tried something we’ve never done before, we booked where we stayed through airbnb.com. Airbnb is a way to find a cool place to stay all over the world. People list their place on the site. After you create a free profile you can search for a place to stay in whatever city you’re traveling to. Once you’ve contacted to host and confirmed your reservation you’re good to go! We stayed in an awesome apartment, if you’re heading to New York checkout this place airy, bright and comfortable.
Once we got into the city on Friday we were off to see Grand Central Terminal and Times Square. It is amazing how many people are in NYC, it seems like its Canada Day all the time. After checking out t
he giant Toy R’ Us and M&M store, we started making our way home. Since we had been traveling all day, we were super hungry, so we started looking for a place to eat. We stumbled upon a Chipotle Mexican Grill. The restaurant serves different types of huge burritos and is know for sourcing its food locally. The way you order if by choosing if you want a bowl, burrito, taco or a salad. You then choose your protein and toppings. While we really enjoyed the food, we thought the portion sizes were way too big, especially for a company that prides itself on being healthier and more environmentally friendly than other restaurants. The other thing that I wasn’t impressed with was the serivce, we had to wait to be served and then had to wait for a chaser. That being said the food was awesome and I would go again for sure.
On Saturday we got up and went down to battery park and took a boat tour of the harbour to see Elis Island and the Statue of Liberty. Every time I see the Statue of Liberty I am amazed at how big it is, seeing it on TV doesn’t do it justice. We then went down to Wall Street to see where all the money was lost and to see Mr. Bull (I don’t know its actual name, I do however know that it isn’t an officially commissioned statue of NYC and is still considered a temporary installation by the city.) After some exploration it was back to our apartment to get ready for the evening.
We started off the night by going to the Top of the Rock. We got the chance to see everyone skating in front of the Rockefeller Centre and then made our way to the top. It was super cool to see New York lit up in the evening, especially the Empire State Building! If you go to NYC and have time you should definitely do the Top of the Rock.
That night we had made reservations for go to one of Bobby Flay’s restaurants, Mesa Grill. For those of you who don’t know Bobby Flay, he is one of the most famous celebrity chefs on the Food Channel. Not only is he an Iron Chef, but he has a number of different shows. In some he challenges people to a throw down and in others he shows you how to grill. Bobby Flay is know for his south-western style cuisine and this is what Mesa’s menu has been providing since 1991. When we got to the restaurant at 9pm the place was buzzing! We were seated quickly and our waiter was there in a wink. We ordered some delicious drinks to sip while we perused the menu. After much humming and haaaing we chose to start with the rough cut tuna nachos and the shrimp and roasted garlic corn tamale. The rough cut tuna nachos were delicious, it was more like tuna tartare with nachos. The tuna was superb and spiced perfectly with a habanero. The tamale too was amazing!
For our mains we had the new mexican spice rubbed pork tenderloin and the spiced rubbed bison strip steak. The steak was delicious, the spices weren’t overpowering and the cooked to perfection. What really impressed me was the new mexican spice rubbed pork tenderloin. It was super tender and the spice rub was amazing, especially when combined with the bur bon-ancho chile sauce. What put the dish over the top was the sweet potato tamale, it was simply mouthwatering. Finally for dessert we split the churros. The food at Mesa was amazing, we really enjoyed all of the different spices and chiles that made each of the dishes. If you do decide to go, please realize that this is a celebrity chef restaurant. A lot of people go to be seen and it is pricey. However it is decently worth it!
There is more to come soon about our adventures in New York City, so make sure to check back soon!
